Trekking Across Eight of Greece’s Greatest Hikes
If you are travelling to Greece, bring your hiking boots! Greece has some great places to walk and hike. If you have never been, to Greece be prepared to be awed by the beautiful scenes that you see on your hike. The Vikos Gorge has wonderful footpaths that interconnect with each other its location allows hikers to enjoy it all through the summer months without having to choose between a beautiful hike and the hot weather. The Vikos Gorge is located in the Pindus Mountains close to the historical Epirus.
For those that are experienced hikers, the island of Hydra offers steep trails. There are no bicycles or motorized vehicles allowed on the trails in Hydra. Be sure to set aside a day to hike in Hydra, it will take approximately 7 hours to get through the trails.
People have been hiking in Delphi for thousands of years. It is one of the most loved destinations in the Mediterranean. The footpaths are well marked and there are caves that can be explored. The late fall and early spring mornings bring fog on the mountain but people like to trudge through. Delphi is also rich with wildlife such a birds that hikers can enjoy, spending more than one day in the area of Delphi is not unheard of and is encouraged.
Pilion is a peninsula that is beautiful and has not only a beachside to explore but also beautiful stone cottages and mountains. Your hike in Pilion will take you through apple orchards and other vegetation. One of the best times to visit is in the late fall and early spring.
For those that would like to spend a few hours trekking in Greece there are several places that you can do that. One of those places in Peloponnesus. Peloponnesus is well maintained and home to the monastery of St. John the Baptist.
No trip to Greece would be complete without a walking tour of Athens. Athens is full of Greek history and architecture that you will not want to miss and the island of Sifnos is beautiful but not touristy.
